Yes and Philly Gatherings To Come

Goodmorning Yes and Philly’ers!
Happy September! We’re excited to share with you our schedule for regular gatherings through September 2018. You’ll notice we’re meeting every other month with an exception or two. Wahoo!
Yes and Philly is a network of people who gather to exchange learning, gain insight, experiment and solve YOUR current real life challenges using complexity based practices such as Liberating Structures, visual thinking, and community storytelling.
All gatherings will be at the Chestnut Hill Friends Meetinghouse
from 6.30 – 8.30 pm
DATES:
Tuesday September 26, 2017
Monday November 13, 2017
Stay tuned for our holiday party date!
Tuesday January 23, 2018
Tuesday March 13, 2018
Thursday May 10, 2018
Might add a June date – stay tuned!
Monday September 10, 2018
We will send out reminders the week before an event. We invite you to bring snacks (for our snack break) and friends or colleagues.

Again, to share HOW we plan to operate:
o  Our typical gathering agenda will always involve bringing your real world challenges to the room and using Liberating Structures and visual thinking exercises to explore those challenges together.
o  We invite folks interested in learning to lead Liberating Structures to step up and do so at any gathering. Let us know ahead of time if possible. Also, Let us know the type of support you would like and if you’re looking for feedback.

o  We will collect and post on our website your ‘real life insights’ as stories and testimonials of what worked well + what you learned using these techniques and being part of this group.
o  Our website will evolve to be a landing page website (not meant to be updated) with stories rather than an outdated and underutilized blog. (What a beautiful fail the blog is!)
o  We will offer to ‘bring the work to the people’ by visiting businesses or community groups who are interested in Liberating Structures, visual thinking and Yes and Philly!

COLLABORATION OF THE COMMUNITY, BY THE COMMUNITY, AND FOR THE COMMUNITY. . .

Our next event will focus on MAKING together. We’ll use game-like exercises to explore making products to benefit our Philly communities. We’ll share something we have been working on, a Facilitator’s Deck of cards, by inviting folks to try the tool out and provide ideas + reflection based on their experience. We’ll ask questions like: How might we test our ideas outside of the room? What community groups do you know who could be our field tests? And…

SO. . .

JOIN US. . . for another great gathering of YES, AND. . . PHILLY

looking for volunteers… know anyone?

people

Yes, and. . . Philly brings people together, builds facilitation & critical thinking skills, maximizes synergy & sparks change. Our core team of Amanda, Bruce, and Cathy, do a lot of work in the background, from organizing and connecting people and ideas to logistics and…. We’re looking for volunteers to help us take our work to the next level.

If you or anyone you know, have the knowledge, experience, passion and commitment to help Yes, and. . . Philly, let us know! Get in touch by email or twitter.
We are currently recruiting volunteers for the following roles:

COMMUNITY NETWORKER is someone who builds strategic partnerships, takes care of our invitation list and listserv, and is always nurturing Yes and Philly relationships (old and new) – lots of connecting & supporting!

STORYTELLER / SOCIAL MEDIA JOURNALIST is someone who tells the story of what’s going on with Yes and Philly via blog entries (including photos, drawings & writing), tweets, facebook posts and… with the intention of sharing the knowledge, meaning and spirit of our gatherings and their outcomes.

LOGISTICS LEADER is someone who would schedule our gatherings & workshops & leadership team meetings, find community spaces for us to gather & coordinate with people running those spaces, as well as help assure we’re organized and equipped with all the materials needed for each session.

HISTORIAN / DATA SCIENTIST is someone who keeps track of various data points and milestones about the group and/or projects we are doing as we create community change! The Scientist will act as a sort of ‘Organization Anthropologist’ by not only using various tech tools to record and connect knowledge and experience AND will help illuminate the emerging patters of meaning and opportunity.

*All of these roles will work closely with each other as well as with Amanda, Cathy & Bruce.

Please reach out to Amanda, Bruce & Cathy or send inquiries to yesandphilly(at)gmail(dot)com.

(We did start a bit of this research and will use that as well as add to it – no prior experience or knowledge necessary to join us!)

learning exchange

In October, we had a learning exchange – in other words, we taught each other LS and other activities to make meetings more meaningful! People presented current challenges, which we used as prompts in some activities. Since the challenges we were working with were real, there was definite satisfaction and learning at the end of the session.

20161024_205202

Together, we built our agenda, moving different activities around with sticky notes. We started with some straight up fun called Zip Zap Zop, then moved to short introductions. We were able to use current questions participants would use in their own upcoming work meetings. We tried out 25/10 (an LS exercise) with a participant prompt something like: How might you best support foster kids and their parents (foster parents &/or birth parents)? The group came up with lots of interesting ideas from grandparent mentoring to a community event type day where everyone makes something together and….

Then together we experienced the ‘Stuck Exercise‘ often used in Social Presencing Theatre. (An activity created by Arawana Hayashi.)

And over some snacks, we talked about the LS exercise ecocycle planning & began a conversation with the prompt: What ‘i-n-g’ word would you use to describe our group and what we are all about? Perhaps this is where we will start our conversation next time!

20161024_204736

There was also time and space to ask questions about how and why Liberating Structures (LS) work. They literally ‘liberate’ us from traditional meeting styles where someone stands at the front of the room and talks ‘at’ an audience which has no opportunity to share opinions, thoughts, knowledge, etc.

Until next time!

Invite to our OCTOBER gathering!

Dear Yes and… Philly crew!

Goodmorning and happy Wednesday!

OUR NEXT GATHERING is Monday OCTOBER 24

address particular change opportunities. We plan to step back and have volunteers step up, as we take a big picture look at facilitation together!

WHEN:      Monday, October 24th 2016 at 6:30-8:30 p.m.

collaboration & action needed!

As our group gathered in September, we had a great time in conversation and the majority take-away feeling was ready to do something together! THANKS to everyone who came out & look for our October invite coming soon!

storytelling1500

We each shared 2 minute stories, with the following prompt: Tell us a story about something you’d like to do and need others to help you do. You can use a 2 question framework: 1) What does this mean? 2) What will I/we do about it? OR a 5 point framework: 1) what is it? 2) why does it matter? 3) who will be involved? 4) when? 5) and then what?

AND we chatted about where we are CURRENTLY. Our gathering structures thus far have fit into 3 categories, as suggested by this image:

threethings700

1) storytelling,

2) making ‘something’ yet to be determined (perhaps a product which we’ve started some user research around), &

3) experiencing facilitation techniques including liberating structures +….

NEXT – The group is evolving! We’re hoping to meet more regularly, be specific about which of these 3 or other gathering frameworks we will use, AND we’re looking to pull a few more people into the organizational aspects of making these gatherings happen as they are a lot of work! (Reach out if you’re interested… we have some informal roles that we’re thinking about – an email coming out shortly.)

If you have been with us before, you know the “surprising power” of the transformative collaboration methods called LIBERATING STRUCTURES.  If you have not attended a YES, AND. . . PHILLY gathering before, you will experience ways to rapidly and powerfully change and improve the collaboration in any group.

At YES, AND. . . PHILLY, we use these proven methods (successfully taught and used in more than 20 countries around the world), along with the power of simply-framed stories for expressing understanding and intention; and the power of visual methods to express these things in ways that words alone can not.

THANKS AND COME GET LIBERATED!

Cheers,
Bruce, Cathy & Amanda
